In January of 2020, Brooke Dance, a 20-year-old Indian-American dancer from New York, became the first American woman to win the prestigious Dance at the Academy Award for Best Dance Performance.

Brooke had been nominated for the award for her performance as the lead character in The Shape of Water, a film that was also the first film to be nominated for Best Foreign Language Film.

In the ceremony, Brooke received the National Book Award for Outstanding Performance by an Indian American Female.

The award was a huge moment for Brooke, and the news made her feel very proud.
